Aeration is allowing air, water, and nutrients to circulate through your lawn by creating small holes in the soil. By providing the grass with a direct pathway to the things it needs to grow, you will strengthen the grass and improve your lawn’s health both now and in the future.

When to Aerate Your Lawn

If your lawn was stepped on a lot, or rained on often, you might want to think about aerating. A heavily worn lawn can fall victim to soil compaction, which is when the soil gets so thick that the roots of grass cannot grow deeply. It can be hard to notice that your lawn is compacted as well. One sign is to see if rain puddles collect on your lawn, but this may not tell you the whole story. How to Aerate a Lawn

Aerating your lawn on your own can be difficult, which is why it is recommended that you call Green Lawn Fertilizing and let us handle the aeration for you. If you are determined to do it yourself, there are aerating tools you can use that poke into the ground and create the aeration holes. Ideally the holes should be about 2-3 inches deep and 2-3 inches apart.

What Happens After Lawn Aeration?

This process will also displace soil and leaving them around your yard. These are known as cores. You should leave the cores where they are and be patient as the will break down after about two weeks or so. After you aerate your lawn you can seed it (with overseeding recommended), water, it and fertilize it. Post-aeration is the perfect time for these steps as there will be a direct route for the nutrients to travel to reach the root of the grass and the soil.

Knowing When to Aerate and How to Create a Green Lawn

Aerating should be done at least once a year. It should become part of your yearly lawn maintenance routine. However, it is not necessarily the be-all end-all for your grass. You’ll still need to seed it, fertilize it, water it, and more. Yet aerating it is the first step on your way to a better, green lawn.
