How to Choose New Turf for Your Landscape

That’s why if your landscape is in need of an overhaul, you should consider the different options in turf to make sure that you’re finding a style of grass that works for your needs – both in maintenance and in appearance.
Choices in Landscape Grass
There are a lot of different options for turf in the Northeast, and you’ll want to carefully consider each type before you decide which turf is right for you. Every grass type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of the most common turf choices include:
- Kentucky Bluegrass – This type of grass is durable, and tends to have a very dark, interesting shade in your landscape architecture. But it requires a bit more fertilizer and is slow to grow when you first seed your landscape.
- Perennial Ryegrass – Though its color isn’t everyone’s favorite, this type of grass grows quickly, and also is very durable. It is not good to shade, however, and requires a lot of water.
- Fine Fescue – Very durable, handles weak water conditions, and requires very little fertilizer, fine fescue is a great option for a low maintenance landscape. The problem, however, is that it doesn’t withstand food traffic well, so it’s not best for places that plan to have a lot of walking.
- Tall Fescue – Tall fescue can make an amazing lawn. It is also durable, withstands shade, and handles less water well. It is not everyone’s favorite turf type, but for those that like it, it can be a lower maintenance option.
