Do Insects Eat Grass?
When you think about pests that destroy your lawn, your first thoughts might be voles, moles, geese, and deer. But, the most destructive pests for your lawn are much smaller. Find out which insects eat grass and which are most dangerous for your turf.
Do Insects Eat Grass?
Yes, there are many insects that eat grass and are dangerous to the overall health of your lawn. Some even cause so much damage, your yard may die entirely! Commons pests that eat grass include:
- Grubs: Grubs are the larvae of beetles. They hatch from their eggs two to four weeks after being laid in July and feed on grass roots immediately. Once they are full-grown (in their grub form), they are approximately 2” in length and are white in color, developing a darker tail end as they mature. Unfortunately, grubs are attracted to healthy lawns because healthy grass has a sufficient root system for food. Grub damage shows in the form of brown, wilting grass in irregularly shaped patches throughout your yard that you can peel back as if it were new sod.
- Moths: Similar to grubs, the larvae form of lawn moths, called sod webworms, can cause severe damage to your lawn. These larvae are 1/4″ to 3/4″ long. They live at the root level of your lawn and eat grass leaves. If you take a closer look at the dying patches of your lawn, you might see small white tubes made of silky webs.
- Mole Crickets: Aptly named after moles that tunnel in your lawn, mole crickets tunnel in your yard, uprooting grasses. Plus, they feed heavily on roots and tender shoots, causing large patches of damage. Mole crickets are strange-looking pests described as a cross between lobsters and crickets. Once you’ve seen one, you won’t be able to forget it!
