How to Make Your Lawn Green and Thick
They say the grass is greener on the other side. Fortunately for you, your lawn is green, thick, and the envy of the neighborhood with these five tips.
How to Make Your Lawn Green and Thick
- Choose the right seed. While you might love the look of some types of grass, not all grasses can thrive in every yard. It’s important you choose the right grass to set your lawn up for the green and thick carpet, which often depends on the climate and sun exposure. The most common types of grasses you’ll find in PA, NJ, and DE are tall fescue and ryegrass, although there are plenty of others you see here and there.
- Aerate and overseed. A heavily worn lawn can fall victim to soil compaction, which is when the soil gets so thick that the roots of grass cannot grow deeply. Aeration reduces compaction by pulling out plugs and provides a great hole for new seeds to thrive deep in the ground. That’s why we often suggest aerating and overseeding (the process of spreading more grass seed than you need) at the same time.
- Water well. The average lawn requires 1″ to 1-1/2″ worth of water a week to stay healthy. Long soakings once or twice a week are more effective than a little bit each day.
- Mow properly. Never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade when mowing; anything more will prohibit proper growth. You should determine the proper height based on the type you have. Cool-season grasses should be around 2-1/2″ to 4″ in height, while warm-season grasses should be about 1″ to 3″ in height. Plus, to mow properly, you need to make sure your equipment is tuned up, like checking to make sure the blades are sharp enough.
