How to Make Weed Killer

Spraying a Weed

Looking for a natural alternative to chemical weed killers? There are a number of non-toxic remedies you can easily concoct with everyday household items. Unlike chemical-based killers, these home-made solutions won’t pose a risk to pets, children, or wildlife.

The most common weeds in Pennsylvania include dandelions, clover, crabgrass, plantain, ground ivy, wild violets, oxalis, and chickweed. Read on to learn about various ways to safely zap these problematic plants.

Vinegar-Based Spray

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups distilled vinegar (its acetic acid works to kill weeds)
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice concentrate (its citric acid enhances the effectiveness of the vinegar)
  • 1 oz rubbing alcohol
  • 2 teaspoons dish soap (helps the solution adhere to the weed, making it vulnerable as the other ingredients attack the weed)
  • 1 teaspoon water (optional, to dilute)
  • Plastic spray bottle

Mix together vinegar, lemon juice, rubbing alcohol, and dish soap. Add water if desired. Pour the solution into a plastic spray bottle. Pro tip: set the nozzle to stream setting for precise application. This solution can kill your desirable plants just as effectively as weeds.

Boiling Water

Dump a full pot of hot water on weeds, but use caution not to affect nearby plants you want to keep. Repeat this method a few times per day for several days for optimum efficacy.

Eggs

The waste water left over from boiling eggs can eradicate weeds even faster than boiling water alone. Pour the hot water on weeds immediately after the eggs are removed.

Salt

Be careful with this method; not only does this method eradicate weeds, but it prevents all plant growth where applied. Salt kills a plant by absorbing into the ground, attacking it at the root.

Ingredients:

  • ½- cup salt (any type will do)
  • Water (enough to fill a spray bottle)
  • Plastic spray bottle

Method One: Dissolve salt into warm or hot water and fill the spray bottle.
Method Two: Hose weeds well, leaving them wet, sprinkle with a liberal amount of salt, and then soak them with water again.
