Mosquito Species: How Many Are There?

Mosquito Species

When you think of mosquitoes that hover around your family during evenings outside, you probably think of just one type of mosquito. Did you know there are thousands of different mosquito species around the world? Each mosquito species has a Latin scientific name, such as Anopheles quadrimaculatus.

Mosquito Species in the World

There are over 3,000 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world. Mosquitoes in other areas transmit particularly scary diseases, like the West Nile Virus and Zika Virus.

Mosquito Species in the Northeast United States

Approximately 200 species of mosquitoes are recognized in the United States, 60 of which reside in the Northeast region. You’ll find some transmit severe diseases to you, your family, and your pets. The most common ones in our area are:

  • Culex pipiens, AKA the northern house mosquito: Transfers West Nile virus
  • Aedes albopictus, AKA the Asian tiger mosquito: Transfers Zika virus, yellow fever virus, dengue fever, Chikungunya fever, and Usutu virus.

While you’ll find these mosquitoes and diseases in the northeast, you can take a proactive approach to keep them away from your lawn by getting rid of standing water sources and using your green thumb to plant mosquito-repellent plants.
