How Much Water Does Your Lawn Need?
A large part of successfully maintaining a lawn is through proper watering. There are many factors to consider when deciding how much water your lawn requires, like your grass type, local climate conditions, and soil type. Read on to learn more about how much water your grass needs to thrive.
Grass Type
The most common grass types in Pennsylvania are cool-season grasses like fescues, rye, and various types of bluegrass. These grasses require regular watering during their growing season (the summer), but in their winter dormancy they only need water in the case of extreme dryness or drought.
Climate Considerations
During Pennsylvania’s hot summers, you want the moisture level of your grass to be in the range of 8 to 10 inches. To determine the moisture level, use a probe to penetrate the soil to the desired depth. If the ground isn’t easily penetrated, it is probably a sign that your soil needs more moisture. Do this in the spring and sporadically during the summer to ensure that the proper moisture levels are maintained and that your soil hasn’t dried out completely. Begin a consistent watering schedule in the spring and continue through the growing season to maintain the desired degree of moisture.
Soil Conditions
During the growing season, it is best to water your lawn every two to three days. This should be a deep watering (about ½ to ¾ of an inch) that thoroughly soaks the soil. This amount of water should be enough to penetrate the soil to the desired depth. Use a rain gauge to measure the moisture and amount of time it takes for your soil to receive enough moisture.
