Springin’ for a Green Lawn

Now that spring has arrived, it’s time to focus back on our lawns. Spring lawn management makes a big difference in the health of your lawn during the summer. The most effective lawn care programs are those who continue throughout the year making Spring and Fall top priority.

Spring Lawn Care

If you neglect Spring lawn care, you could end up paying for it for the rest of the year.

Preventative Weed ControlWeeds are a back-breaking, time-consuming aggravation that most could do without. Ideally, you should stop weed growth before it starts making the task easier, long-lasting, and more importantly; cheaper. While there are not preventative controllers for all weeds, they are available for the most aggravating weeds such as crabgrass. These pre-emergent herbicides create a “barrier” within your soil that inhibits the germination of these weeds making it very important to get it down as early as possible.

Fertilizing – The best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn. Grass easily can out compete weeds when you maintain the lawn in the grass’ favor.  This is easily done through fertilizing. By feeding your lawn with the right nutrients, the grass is encouraged to grow and choke out the weeds before they can take root in the lawn making fertilization a key element to lawn care. Think of it as an investment in your lawn’s root system that yields considerable returns; a healthy, green, weed-free lawn. Green Lawn’s granular fertilizer is a slow release formula that will give you a continuous feeding. The treatment works best when watered in however, normal spring conditions will provide enough rain to efficiently breakdown the products.

Clean Up & Inspect – Make sure you take a good look at your lawn. Winter weather can leave more than just snow behind. Inspect for snow molds – light tan patches of what looks to be dead grass. These areas will recover naturally but a light raking will help it along. Fungicides are not required for this type of lawn disease but fertilizer will encourage new growth to help remove the disease quicker.

Mowing – Cut the grass as soon as it needs it, don’t wait for it to get too long. Your mowing habits are important to the results and health of your lawn. Now is the time to make sure your mower blades are sharpened to ensure a clean cut on every blade. Your grass should be kept at 3 to 3 ½ inches long to keep the turf dense and healthy resulting in fewer weeds. The frequency of your cutting will depend on the growth rate of your grass.
