Tall Fescue Grass Seed for PA & NJ
If you want that luscious, green lawn, you need to pick out the right grass seed for your area of the country. The grass chosen for a yard in California won’t necessarily thrive on the East Coast. A popular choice for PA & NJ lawns is tall fescue grass seed. Learn what this grass is like and other options for your yard.
Tall Fescue Grass Seed for PA & NJ
Tall fescue thrives in the Northeast United States. It’s a low-maintenance and resilient choice, which is why it’s great for nearly every lawn. It does fairly well in both full-sun and shade. Plus, it is resistant to drought. Feel free to plant it on heavily trafficked areas. You can expect talle fescue to reach a healthy height of 2″ to 3.5″.
While it is an easy choice, it does take longer to germinate than similar grass types. So, it may take longer to see results. That’s why it’s particularly important for this type to aerate and seed in the fall, so you can prepare for a healthy spring.
Other Grass Seed for PA & NJ
If tall fescue isn’t the right choice for your lawn, there are many other types that thrive in our area of the country.
- Ryegrass. Unlike tall fescue, ryegrass has a quick germination time (usually within 5 to 7 days) and it does well in full sun and okay in the shade. Ryegrass needs to be watered regularly but is fairly resistant to drought as long as it is not for an unusually extended period of time. It should reach a height of 1.5″ to 2.5″.
- Bentgrasses. If you’re a golfer, you’ll know this one! Bentgrass is often found on golf course putting greens, this high-maintenance turf has fine, slender, flat leaves with membranous ligules.
- Kentucky Bluegrass. This type of seed results in a darker green lawn than any other grasses in our area can produce. Kentucky bluegrass is soft and resilient with V-shaped blades and canoe-pointed tips.
- Rough Bluegrass. Rough bluegrass has soft, narrow blades with canoe-shaped tips and tends to lie flat in one direction, creating a fine-textured, yellow-green lawn. It is quick to turn brown in summer if not watered enough.
